Help with travel costs
You may be entitled to help with the cost of travel for NHS treatment on referral by a doctor or dentist.
The Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) is for patients who do not have a medical need for ambulance transport, but cannot afford the cost of travel.
You may be entitled to HTCS if you receive:
- income support;
- income-based Jobseeker's Allowance;
- income-based Employment and Support Allowance;
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit;
- a certificate of low income called an HC2 or HC3;
- an NHS Tax Exemption Certificate.
You may also be entitled to help with the travel costs of a companion if, for medical reasons, you need someone to travel with you. Their travel costs are counted as part of your travel costs.
Patient transport service
We have a patient transport service for patients who need it (ie those patients who are medically unable to travel to hospital on their own).
For the first referral to the hospital, the request for transport is made by the patient’s GP. If there are any further follow up appointments, the hospital department will book any necessary transport.
