Claire joined the Trust in 2005, and after working as a bed manager and subsequently a service manager, she applied for the newly-created position of General Manager of Clinical Operations.

Aged just 29, Claire became the youngest general manager of clinical operations in the Trust. Claire heads up the team responsible for the flow of patients through the hospital.

She said: "I am responsible for the smooth running of St Helier, and that includes ensuring that all of the local and national targets are met.

"Every day, we liaise closely with the London Ambulance Service and look at the numbers of patients at other hospitals across London, so we have a clear idea of what we should expect."

The role has provided Claire with a number of challenges that her and her team have tackled head on: "The job can be quite pressured, but as a team, we have to look at how to get through these challenges.

"Our aim is to improve every aspect of the patient's journey through the hospital, and we aim to do that by reducing the length of time patients stay with us unnecessarily, and improving the way we discharge them.

"This should give patients the best quality care in the most timely manner and appropriate environment."

The onset of winter and the added pressures that come along with the change in season certainly has made Claire's job a little harder, but confidence is still high that all of the national targets will be met.

She said: "The A&E department has been incredibly busy recently, but despite those added pressures, we're still more than capable of reaching our Emergency Access Target."

The Emergency Access Target requires at least 98% of people attending A&E to be seen, treated, admitted or discharged within four hours of arriving.

Claire added: "It is a challenging job, but I'm learning all the time. And if things do get a bit stressful, I hit the gym after work. It's a great way to wind down."
