Librarian: Marco Isetta

Marco has worked for the Trust for 14 years and every day, helps a wide range of people - from consultants to healthcare assistants - track down the information that they need. The librarians are also on hand to support medical students and junior doctors as they complete their studies.

Despite the quiet atmosphere, the library is a busy place to be for both the librarians and the members of staff who use it. Marco explained: "The library service at the Trust is extensive - we have approximately 8,000 books here and 5,000 at Epsom. The service is well used and we currently have 3,060 registered members - that's a majority of Trust staff.

"As a teaching Trust, we rely on our staff to keep on learning. All of our clinical staff need to keep developing and researching throughout their careers - it's a never ending process for them. But we're also here for those with curious minds - you don't have to be a medic to come and use the library.

"We offer the scientific, academic things that all of our clinical staff could need. And of course, if we don't have what is needed - whether that's a hard copy book or an online paper - we have a strong relationship with the neighbouring libraries at Kingston and Mayday, and throughout the NHS locally, so that we can work together quickly to deliver whatever is required."

Marco is a qualified librarian, having completed a degree in teaching, then another in librarianship and subsequently a Masters in information management. He said: "It is a very rewarding job. I deal with people on an individual basis who need important information quickly. It is hard to measure the impact that the library has on the organisation, but we have been told by doctors that our help has saved lives - we have dug out papers and information that have truly made a difference to people's treatments and their outcomes.

"And in terms of being cost-effective, we're very economic. A consultant could spend four hours looking through our databases for the paper he or she needs, but it'll take five minutes for us - and we are a lot cheaper!"
