Ray Nelms, security supervisor, told us all about the different tasks involved in being a security officer at the Trust. Ray is based at St Helier but works across the sites. He's been working for the Trust f for seven years.

He said: "There's never a dull moment round here. Something different happens everyday, but we just take it as it comes. Whatever's thrown at us, we're trained to get there as soon as we can and deal with the situation as peacefully as possible.

"It can be quite stressful, but we've got a really good team here. There are some new faces in the team, but they're all settling in really well and doing a great job.

"And while it is a shame that some people can behave in an aggressive way, it's not all doom and gloom. We also do some quieter jobs like locking up the hospital at night and keeping an eye on the car parks.

"What's important to us is protecting our patients, staff and even the hospital buildings themselves. When that goes right, it's really good. We want to deal with all of the calls that we get during a shift in the most positive way possible - basically, we want everyone to be happy!"

The security team are present at our hospitals, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so members of the team work long shifts, and often through the night.

Ray said: "We do four days on and four days off, and each shift is 12 hours long. It is a long week sometimes, but at least we have that nice break to relax and unwind."

Ray uses his spare time to relax at home and spends time with his ten year old daughter.
