Jill Line has worked as the staff and patient hairdresser for 30 years, splitting her time between visiting patients on the wards and styling the 'dos of many members of staff and volunteers up in the salon, which is on the 5th floor of Ferguson House.

Jill said: "I really love my job - it's just perfect. I enjoy making people feel a little bit better about themselves and getting to know such a huge range of different people. Although it can be challenging working on the wards and cutting hair while people are sitting up in bed, it's incredible rewarding to be making a difference.

"It also gives me quite an insight into what life's really about. I often work with people who are chronically ill or have lost a loved one and I think that I have learned a lot from meeting people who are going through things like that."

In her time at the Trust, Jill has made some firm friends and many staff are regulars at the salon. She said: "Many of the members of staff that visit the salon have been coming regularly since I started working here.

"And two of my original clients have now had units named after them - Dick Springall regularly had his hair cut here and Mary Moore came every Wednesday for more than 20 years."

But things have changed since Jill first walked through the doors of St Helier. She said: "When I first came to the hospital, the salon was situated on the first floor of Ferguson House, which was almost entirely accommodation. At that time you could park your car in the main road quite easily, despite there being two tennis courts at the far end of the car park and a swimming pool where Woodlands Nursery is now."

"Every day is different, and I never, ever think 'I don't want to go to work today'. And besides, I get some great advice from the patients. They are always telling me to live life to the full and enjoy everyday, which I do. They also say that I should keep healthy, which I try to do and not to get old - I'm still working on that one."
