Working at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust entitles you to a generous range of benefits and services.

These benefits, which range from help with childcare to discounts off leisure facilities in the area, are designed to help all of our employees enjoy their time at work and at home.

Below is an alphabetical list of those benefits:

Accommodation

Whether you're new to the NHS, or already work for us, we can help with your accommodation needs.

There is accommodation available to rent on-site at both Epsom and St Helier hospitals, for individuals and families. It is in high demand, but if we are unable to provide hospital accommodation for you, we will do our best to help you find somewhere else to live.

The NHS is made up over 450 different organisations spread across the country. If you do need to move house, you may find there is financial help available to make buying or renting a home more affordable. Schemes vary from assistance with rental costs to offering interest-free loans for home purchase.

You may also qualify for help with buying an affordable home as part of the key worker living programme.

Annual leave

NHS staff are given a generous amount of fully paid annual holiday, depending on how long they have worked here:

  • Up to five years' NHS service: 27 days plus public holidays

  • After five years' NHS service: 29 days plus public holidays

  • After ten years' NHS service: 33 days plus public holidays

Childcare

The Trust offers numerous high quality childcare options, and our dedicated childcare co-ordinator will help you work out the best care solution for you and your family.

Communications

At the Trust, we value communications between all levels and members of staff very highly, which is why we publish a number of newsletters, an internal staff magazine and update the intranet regularly. We also host a monthly 'Meet the Chief Executive' event which is open to all staff. It is an opportunity to hear all the latest news from the Trust, including updates on our performance and plans for the future. There will also be ample time to ask questions and to give your feedback.

Discounts

Healthservice Discounts is an online benefits service for all NHS employees, which can save you money on holidays and travel, fashion and retail, entertainment and leisure, health and beauty, home and garden, electrical goods, finance and motoring.

The Trust also organises discounts with local business and services for employees.

Flexible working

We have a range of flexible working policies in place to help you balance your home and working life. These include flexi-time, working from home, part-time hours and job sharing. Balancing your work with your home life can promote productivity, improve creativity and help combat stress.

Maternity and paternity leave are now rights rather than wishes, and it's your legal right to apply for flexible working if you have a child under 6 (or a disabled child under 18) or care for a dependent adult.

However, the Trust has gone further than that. We are committed to helping all staff achieve a work-life balance, regardless of their personal circumstances. Therefore, all our staff have the right to apply to work more flexibly.

Health and fitness

Staff at the Trust can take advantage of a number of benefits when it comes to health and fitness.

Many nearby sports centres offer significant discounts to our employees, so you can enjoy a workout at an affordable price.

Annually, the Trust hosts an annual staff welfare day - and last year's was bigger and better than ever. The event included a free 'human MOT' where staff members could check their blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index, and cholesterol levels.

The event also featured free manicures, free hairdressing and a healthy eating stall; as well as a host of complementary therapies.

We can also help to save you up to 40% off the price of brand new bike, as part of the cycle to work scheme. We buy the bike from the retailer and our employee then leases it from us. This arrangement allows the employee to buy the bike tax free, saving them between 33 and 40% off the original price.

Maternity and paternity leave

Our maternity leave entitlement is very generous. All female employees, irrespective of their length of service or hours of work are entitled to Ordinary Maternity Leave for a period of 26 weeks, subject to some terms and conditions.

Paternity leave entitles all male staff to ten days paid leave in one year.

Pension

All Trust employees are entitled to join the excellent NHS Pension Scheme. Employer contributions are generous, and the scheme offers additional benefits such as the option to take early retirement or a tax-free lump sum.

Every new employee automatically becomes a member of the NHS Pension Scheme and will get an excellent package of pension benefits, fully protected against inflation and guaranteed by the government.

Salary

Everyone joining the NHS is guaranteed a competitive salary that matches their ability and responsibilities, and is given every opportunity to increase it through training and personal development. All of the Trust's salaries are subject to an annual increase.

Salaries across the NHS are standardised for the whole country, although working for the Trust does entitle you to the additional allowance for London Weighting.

Support for carers

We offer paid leave of up to three days in any one year (i.e. April - March) to care for a dependent person.

A dependent may be a child, partner or parent of the employee i.e. someone who relies on the employee for assistance and where the employee is the primary carer.

Training and development

We are committed to the personal development of all staff, and offer numerous training courses to further your learning, training and career.

Firstly, it is essential that all staff receive statutory and mandatory training in order to work safely within the work place. All new staff will attend a corporate and local induction where they will receive the majority of this training. From then on, staff will be appraised annually, and will agree a personal development plan with their manager.

Our Trust training programme offers an extensive range of courses, from first aid at work to presentation skills and leadership development.

We were one of the first trusts to recognise the value of vocational qualifications and offer employees the opportunity to study a range of vocational training and national vocational qualifications. Whether you want to learn more about medical terminology or customer service, the Trust will be happy to support you in getting your qualification.

We also offer bespoke course tailored specifically to your needs. This will enable all members of staff to access further training, regardless of any disabilities or other influences.

Travel assistance

All of the hospitals within the Trust are easily accessible by public transport and by car.

To help staff travel around the Trust, a free staff shuttle bus operates between Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals on weekdays.

Cycle to work scheme

The 'Cycle to Work' scheme, launched by the Department for Transport in 2005, aims to encourage employees to switch to cycling as their main method of travelling to work.

The scheme allows staff to take advantage of National Insurance and Income Tax savings (through salary sacrifice), which results in savings of between 33% and 40% on the original purchase price of a cycle.

The scheme is open to all members of Epsom and St Helier University Hospital NHS staff.
