Minor procedures area
Day case procedures (where patients are discharged on the same day following a proceedure) are performed in a dedicated renal procedure room near the renal clinic area and Richard Bright Ward under the supervision of specialised renal staff.
These procedures may include:
- A kidney biopsy under ultrasound guidance
- Insertion of a line for haemodialysis
- A catheter for peritoneal dialysis or
- Removal of tunnelled dialysis lines that are no longer needed.
All procedures are performed under sterile conditions with the aid of a dedicated procedure nurse. As this is an extremely busy renal unit, all staff are very experienced in all minor renal procedures which are very carefully documented and audited to maintain a safe environment.
All dialysis lines are inserted under ultrasound control using a site-rite probe, and all kidney biopsies are performed using real time ultrasound control.
