Electronic books

All members of staff who work for Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust and have an NHS OpenAthens username and password can access the following electronic books.

100 Cases series

The 100 Cases series provides a unique learning and revision tool that guides students through clinical cases similar to those that students and foundation year doctors may meet in the general practice setting. The cases have been written specifically to help students develop skills of clinical reasoning through the scenarios which have include the patient’s medical history. 

Electronic titles that are available to staff working at our hospitals who have an Athens username and password include:

  • ‘100 Cases in Clinical Medicine’,

  • ‘100 Cases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology’ 

  • ‘100 Cases in Surgery’.

To access a given title click on the title and enter your OpenAthens username and password in the boxes provided. At a Glance e-books

The library has purchased a number of the electronic titles from the market leading ‘at a Glance’ series including

  • ‘Medical Statistics at a Glance’,

  • ‘Ophthalmology at a Glance’,

  • ‘Oral Microbiology at a Glance’

  • ‘Haematology at a Glance’. 

This series is used worldwide by health professionals, junior doctors and more.  
Well-renowned for the presentation of its topics which uses easy to follow diagrams accompanied by concise explanatory text, this series of books are useful introductory texts to a given topic.

Staff that work at our hospitals who have an OpenAthens username and password are the only ones that can have access to these electronic books.

Electronic ABC Books

The ABC series of books are an up to date, highly illustrated and practical source of knowledge for health care professionals. A number of electronic titles from the series are available to staff working at our hospitals who have an OpenAthens username and password. Titles that have been purchased by the library include:

  • ‘ABC of Electrocardiography’,

  • ‘ABC of Geriatric Medicine’

  • ‘ABC of Rheumatology’.

Electronic ophthalmology books

System of ophthalmology, 1958 by Sir Stewart Duke-Elder (opens in a new window)

This classic text is now available to read online. No username and password is required.

Duane’s Ophthalmology, 2013 (opens in a new window)

Duane’s ophthalmology is recognised by eye care professionals all over the world as being the key text in their field.  The text contains hundreds of colour images and includes descriptions of techniques of ophthalmic surgery.  The text is now available with an Epsom and St Helier OpenAthens (opens in a new window) username and password.

The Wills Eye Manual: Office and Emergency Room Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Disease (opens in a new window) (6th edition)

The Wills Eye Manual is a best-selling source of authoritative guidance on treating ocular disorders in an office, emergency room, or hospital setting. It is written in a concise outline format. This text is now available with an Epsom and St Helier OpenAthens (opens in a new window) username and password.

Kortext

All Epsom and St Helier staff now have access to a wide selection of electronic books via the Kortext platform.  You will need an Epsom and St Helier OpenAthens account (opens in a new window) to access the full text of any of the books.  Follow the instructions below to access the collection.

  1. Go to the Kortext home page, in the first box select Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust and click the arrow next to the first box.
  2. Sign in with your OpenAthens username and password.
  3. Click on Collections tab just below the search box to browse the collection or search for a title using the search box. Click on the three horizontal dots below the books to Borrow a book, to find out more information about the book and also to export the reference.
  4. Click on My library to the left of the screen to see which books you have out on loan.  You can read books offline, add notes to books and export them and also renew books.  If you would like training on Kortext or to find out more please contact the library team at: esth.hirsonlibrary@nhs.net.

Oxford handbooks online

Sceenshot of the Oxford Handbooks Courtesy of Health Education England, NHS staff and students on placement in England have access to over 130 Oxford University Press medical and healthcare books online.  To access the collection you will need an Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust OpenAthens username and password.  You can register for an OpenAthens username and password here.  You can access the page via a special dedicated portal here.

 

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Procedures

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Procedures (opens in a new window): The online edition of this popular title is now available with an Epsom and St Helier Athens username and password.  It contains evidence-based clinical skills and procedures related to all the essential aspects of a patient’s care.

The Textbook of Paediatric Emergency Medicine

This textbook is considered to be the most comprehensive one in the field of paediatric emergency medicine.  It includes over 70 acute paediatric presentations and includes chapters on palpitations, cystic fibrosis and ultrasound.
