£57million investment to improve emergency care at St Helier Hospital

We have secured up to £57 million in funding from NHS London to expand and improve the Emergency Department at St Helier Hospital.

The investment will help us respond to growing demand, with around 250 people attending the department each day, and ensure our patients receive care in a safer, more modern environment.

The proposed plans include:

  • A larger Emergency Department with improved layout and facilities
  • A new Urgent Treatment Centre to treat more patients quickly
  • Expanded Same Day Emergency Care services, helping patients avoid unnecessary overnight hospital stays
  • Upgraded infrastructure to improve safety and reliability

Patients will benefit from shorter waits, more efficient care, and better overall experience.

Dr Amir Hassan, Divisional Medical Director for Medicine and ED Consultant at ESTH, said “This is a significant and very welcome investment in the future of St Helier. It reflects both the growing demand on our services and the incredible efforts of colleagues who continue to deliver high-quality care every day, despite the challenges of working in an ageing and often overcrowded environment.”

The project is subject to a number of approvals before building work can start, but if all plans are accepted, construction could begin in spring 2027, in phases to make sure we can continue providing care throughout.

This will support St Helier for the next decade and beyond, ahead of the planned Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Sutton and is an important step in improving urgent and emergency care for our communities.
