A splash of paint: £20,000 nautical-themed hospital playroom makes waves
The young patient being treated in Epsom Hospital’s dedicated children’s ward now have access to a range of interactive, playful activities in a bright new £20,000 seaside-themed playroom.
Months of redesign and refurbishment in conjunction with children’s charity, Momentum, (www.moment-um.org) have transformed the room into a colourful space complete with beautiful seaside images of beach huts and deckchairs on one wall and a daisy meadow on another.
Lorna Bramwells, Head of Nursing for Women’s and Children’s Services, said that she was delighted with the room: “The new playroom is absolutely brilliant. It really has that ‘wow!’ factor which really makes an impression when you first walk in, especially for the people that matter most – our young patients.
“We’d like to say a special thanks to Momentum for making this project become a reality, as well as to all of the individuals and organisations who have made donations. They have enabled the teams involved to create a fantastic play room.”
Studies have shown that a stimulating environment will assist children’s recovery time during their stay in hospital.
Play Specialist, Jo Dodge, said: “The playroom is a fantastic space; we’ve had such positive feedback from staff and families. It is so bright and inviting and will be a relaxing space for our families to enjoy at what can be a very stressful time.
“Hopefully the new room will help as many of our younger patients as possible feel that little bit better by having a bit more fun during their stay.”
Through its Family Support Programme, Momentum currently supports approximately 200 families across south west London and Surrey, including children undergoing cancer treatment at Epsom Hospital.
