Brand new education centre opens at St Helier Hospital

The brand new £521,000 education centre at St Helier Hospital was officially opened recently by special guest Professor Martin Rossor from The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries.

The centre features a brand new library (complete with an extensive collection medical journals and textbooks) and a suite of purpose built rooms, all kitted out with brand new ICT equipment. This includes: HD projectors, fully equipped ICT suites, VR headsets, classrooms with sound-proofing for flexible use of space, a brand new lecture theatre and an ID-card based security system (allowing for secure out of hours access).

Following some opening speeches from both the guests and members of the Trust, the group moved on to a tour of the facility, which showcased the different services that the centre has to offer and the facilities that are available. This included a CPR demonstration from one of the team (putting Professor Rossor’s CPR skills to the test!) and a demonstration of some NHS endorsed educational board games. After the demonstration, the tour moved on to the Hirson Library and e-learning suites, with a chance to look at the fantastic classrooms.

Joint Medical Director, James Marsh said: “The new centre has a great range of resources and facilities available, including brand new ICT equipment and fresh, clean, comfortable classrooms and study space, packed with books and journals on a whole range of medical topics. This means we can provide a first class education facility to our trainee doctors, ensuring that they get their careers off to a fantastic start and feel confident in their ability to join the ranks with their senior colleagues when they finish their training.

“It’s not just our trainee doctors who will be benefiting from the centre either. I know that many of our existing staff have expressed an interest in taking part in research projects with us and with our new education centre now open, we can offer them the chance to take part in library-based research programmes, so I hope to see even more students come through our doors in the days to come.

“I am really pleased to see how the new education centre has turned out – it is light, bright and full of helpful members of staff and great resources to assist with learning. It is clear to see that a lot of hard work and thought has gone into the creation of the centre, so I am really glad to see that everyone’s hard work has paid off. I am positive that this new centre is really going to give our (already outstanding) educational programmes an excellent base of operations to assist with providing a superb level of education to our students and staff.
