Coping with cancer – free course at Epsom Hospital

A free course to support local cancer patients and their loved ones as they deal with the devastating effects of the disease is set to begin at Epsom Hospital next month (starting 28 September).

The seven-week course, called ‘managing the cancer experience’, offers practical advice and emotional support to anyone who has been affected by cancer.

Tarlika Patel, Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager, said: "Sadly, cancer touches the lives of many people – young and old – and its impact can be truly devastating.

"This course is for anybody whose life has been affected by cancer, and helps to explore issues such as how to deal with the diagnosis and any side effects of treatment. People on the course will also learn about relaxation techniques which can help reduce stress and anxiety.

"Similar courses that we have offered in the past have been a very positive experience for all those involved and we have had good feedback from the people who attended.

"As well as patients, carers, relatives and friends can also attend the course. We aim to offer people a host of helpful information, including strategies they can use to deal with the illness."

The course will also explore other issues, such as the various types of treatment available for cancer, diet and nutrition, talking about cancer, relaxation and art therapy.

The course will run on Wednesday afternoons from 10.30am – 12.30pm from 28 September 2016 to 9 November at The Macmillan Butterfly Centre, First Floor, B Block at Epsom Hospital.

For more information, or to book a place on the course, please contact Tarlika Patel on 01372 735456 or email tarlika.patel@esth.nhs.uk (before 16 September).
