Heroic effort: Epsom Medical Equipment Fund a finalist in prestigious awards

Epsom Medical Equipment Fund, which raises money for the purchase of medical equipment for Epsom Hospital, has been named as a finalist in the BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards.

The Community Heroes Awards are presented by BBC Surrey each year to recognise unsung heroes across the county, with members of the public able to nominate people or groups across a range of categories. The Fund, which has raised a staggering £4 million pounds since it was founded in 1979, has been shortlisted in the ‘Fundraiser’ category in recognition of its ongoing support for Epsom Hospital.

Fund Co-ordinator and founding member Bess Harding said: “We are so thrilled, and honoured, to be named as one of the finalists in the BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards.

“It is very special knowing that we have been nominated by members of the public – we are fortunate to receive a huge amount of support from local people, who not only give money to the Fund but are often so generous with their time as well. I am very proud of the work that the Fund does and, whether we win on the night or not, this recognition means so much.”

Epsom Medical Equipment Fund provides equipment to help diagnose, investigate and treat patients at Epsom Hospital, and over the years has made significant achievements, including: the purchase of the first CT scanner for the hospital, a £71,000 x-ray machine, and, most recently, raising over £50,000 for a new ultrasound scanner. Tim Hamilton, Director of Communications and Board-level lead for fundraising at Epsom and St Helier hospitals, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Epsom Medical Equipment Fund for their support and continuing generosity.

“The equipment that they have provided to our hospital has made, and continues to make, a real difference to our patients, visitors and staff. On behalf of the trust, I would like to congratulate Bess and everyone involved with the Fund on securing this fantastic recognition for their ongoing hard work.”

Overall winners will be announced at the BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards ceremony on Monday 28 November. For more information about the awards, including the full lists of finalists, please visit http://bbc.in/291YdIH.
