New digital wayfinding service helps patients and visitors find their way around our hospitals
Patients and visitors can now navigate their way around St George’s and Epsom Hospitals more easily, with the launch of our new Find your way around our hospitals digital wayfinding service.
Finding your way around a large hospital can be challenging, particularly if you’re visiting for the first time, do not speak English as your first language or have accessibility needs. Research commissioned by Deloitte Digital suggests that 87% of patients ask for directions when visiting a hospital or other public health facility, while around 30% of first-time visitors get lost.
Designed to make visiting hospital simpler and less stressful, the free digital wayfinding service allows patients to plan a personalised route from home to their clinic, ward or other destination, with clear, step-by-step directions before and during their visit.
Designed with accessibility in mind
The
accessibility features, helping to support different mobility needs by offering alternative routes where available, making it easier for more people to navigate our hospitals.
Interactive wayfinding kiosks
To ensure the service is accessible to everyone, interactive wayfinding kiosks and wall-mounted touchscreens are also available for patients and visitors who do not have a mobile device, or prefer not to use one.
Kiosks and touchscreens are now available at Epsom Hospital from 15 July, while at St George’s Hospital, they will begin rolling out from mid-August and will be located at main entrances and other busy public areas.
A version of the digital wayfinding service is also being developed for St Helier Hospital and is planned to launch in early 2027.
Supporting innovation in the NHS
The digital wayfinding service has been made possible through funding from the New Hospital Programme (NHP) Innovation Fund.
A successful proposal submitted in partnership with the New Hospital Programme secured funding to implement and evaluate a digital wayfinding pilot at St George’s Hospital and Epsom Hospital. The pilot will help assess how digital navigation can improve the experience of patients and visitors while providing valuable learning for future hospital developments.
Findings from the pilot will help inform the New Hospital Programme’s Hospital 2.0 blueprint, supporting the design of future hospitals and improvements across existing NHS estates.
The project also supports the New Hospital Programme’s ambition to create hospitals that are easier to navigate, with welcoming entrances, clearer wayfinding and environments that enable patients to move around more independently while helping staff deliver safe, efficient care.
