Nurse’s act of kindness transforms life of elderly patient in the community
Epsom and St Helier nurse Sumitha was working in the community when she visited a patient in their 90s at home.
She noticed the property was cold, there was barely any food, and the patient was unable to collect her medication due to her health.
The patient was unaware that help was available to her, until Sumitha stepped in.
Sumitha contacted the relevant agencies, resulting in heating being installed in the patient’s property and a care package being arranged.
Today (12 May) is International Nurses' Day which celebrates the amazing work that nurses all over the world do in hospitals, communities and in their everyday lives, even when they’re off duty.

Sumitha, who is a Practice Educator within the Medicine Division with a Master's degree in Community Health Nursing, said: “The next time I visited the patient’s home, it felt completely different. It was warm, safe and comforting - and they were no longer facing everything alone.
“Nursing isn’t just about caring for patients clinically. It’s about noticing the things left unsaid, showing compassion in action, and advocating for people who may not have the strength to ask for help themselves.”
