Potential disruption to planned orthopaedic operations
Like all hospitals, we have been informed of a global supply issue affecting bone cement products used in orthopaedic surgery – any existing stock already in our hospitals is unaffected.
We want to reassure people that emergency and urgent trauma operations will safely continue.
We are working closely with NHS England and procurement teams to minimise disruption to our patients and to use alternative suppliers where possible.
Our clinical teams are carefully reviewing planned operations and will continue to prioritise patients based on clinical need over the coming weeks.
This does mean we have had to reschedule a small number of elective procedures while we prioritise emergency care and we offer our deepest apologies to those affected patients.
We know this may be worrying for people who have already waited a long time for joint replacement surgery or other planned procedures. We are truly sorry for any uncertainty and distress this may cause.
Patients do not need to call us, as we will contact them directly if there is any change to their planned care and will do everything we can to avoid or reduce delays.
