Memorial trees light up for loved ones at Epsom and St Helier
Epsom and St Helier hospitals are giving people the chance to write a special message to loved ones on their Christmas memorial trees this year.
Anyone can dedicate a star to celebrate the life of a loved one, or write a personal thank you message to a friend, relative, member of staff or hospital team. The stars are available in the reception areas at both Epsom and St Helier hospitals.
The trees were unveiled at a special ‘switch on’ ceremony – at Epsom, Chief Nurse Charlotte Hall and Dr Martine Meyer, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, switched on the lights, while at St Helier Charlotte was joined by Fire Safety Manager Gary Milan. Patient First Administrator Sami Young, who organised the events, explained: “This time of year is one where our thoughts often turn to celebrations, remembering loved ones who are no longer with us and expressing thanks to the people who mean the most to us. That is why as a trust we are inviting visitors, patients and staff to make a special dedication on one of our Christmas memorial trees.
“At St Helier Gary kindly agreed to sponsor a tree from business Mr M Christmas Tree, and at Epsom the tree was generously donated by Ashtead Park Garden Centre. We are very grateful to them both for their wonderful gesture.”
The trees will be on display throughout the festive period outside the main entrances at both St Helier and Epsom hospitals. Chief Nurse Charlotte said: “The memorial trees are a wonderful idea that really captures the spirit of remembrance, celebration and thanks that always occurs at this time of year.
“These stars give our staff, visitors and patients the opportunity to remember the life of a loved one they cherished, or to thank a friend that has always been there or to express a message of gratitude to their families or to one of our teams.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to Sami, who has been instrumental in organising all of this and to everyone who has written a special dedication on our trees so far. On behalf of the trust I’d also like to thank everyone who has supported our hospitals this this year – Merry Christmas and happy New Year all!”
