Augustus Mohan, Private Patients Deputy Service Manager

“I chose not to go to university, opting instead to focus on my career goals. I wanted to apply for a career in a well-established field with progression and my mother always wanted me to be a doctor, so I chose the NHS.

“I undertook an HR apprenticeship before obtaining a substantive role as a Private Patients Ward Clerk in 2013. I’ve been lucky enough to work in several trusts and progressed through the ranks before joining ESTH in 2019 as a Private Patients Supervisor. With almost nine years of service to my name, I’m now a Private Patients Deputy Service Manager. I love my role – I’m a people person and love problem solving, and I’m able to use both of these skills daily.

“As a manager, I lead by example and love to get involved; this is something I also admire in our senior staff. As a private unit, we generate income to put back into other departments. Our service is important because it frees up NHS capacity, puts money back into the NHS, and helps two individuals on the road to recovery at the same time; that’s why I love my work.

“The values and experience at ESTH is very positive, the Trust is led from the top and communication is always there. There are daily bulletins, multiple networks to join, and staff wellbeing and career progression are always being discussed.

“The Race, Equality and Cultural Heritage Network (REACH) have helped me enormously, and I’m now studying a Chartered Management Business degree with Kingston University thanks to their support, and that of the Trust and my management team. I can’t wait to give back and contribute what I’ve learnt to positively impact the Trust. ESTH is an incredibly forward thinking and transparent Trust, and it offers a bright future for those willing to work hard.

“A job helping others provides a sense of unique fulfilment, and I’m proud of my role every day. A particularly proud moment was receiving an ESTH Hero Award from our Chief Exec for working on the frontline during the first COVID wave; my mother’s pride shone from her face. I joined the NHS in part to keep her happy, but it’s also made me happy – and both of us proud!”
