Couple raises money for maternity unit after suffering two miscarriages

A couple who have suffered two heartbreaking miscarriages have raised thousands of pounds for the maternity unit at Epsom Hospital.

Krissi and Sam wanted to thank dedicated maternity staff who looked after them so ran the Rome Marathon on Sunday.

So far they have raised a staggering £2,200 which could fund new medical equipment, improving facilities, supporting staff training and so much more to help patients, their families and the incredible team.

Krissi said: “We can’t thank the maternity teams enough. Last year was terrible for us.”

In February last year the couple were given the news at their 12-week scan that their baby had no heartbeat.

After taking some time to recover they fell pregnant six months later with twins. However, they were told at their 12-week scan that neither baby had a heartbeat.

Krissi said: “Dealing with this the first time round was very tough but the second time felt like we had been hit by a bus.”

The couple have now been referred to the recurrent miscarriage unit where they will be cared for by devoted staff.

Krissi and Sam said they wanted to give something back and thank the teams that have looked after them.

By doing something positive they also hope to raise awareness of miscarriage – a subject they say is not often spoken about.

“We wanted to share our story so that others don’t feel so alone,” Krissi said.

“We took great comfort from others sharing their personal journeys and so wanted to do the same.”

Offering comfort to other affected couples, Krissi said: “My biggest piece of advice is to be kind to yourself."
