Blindness and visual impairment

Blindness is a loss or lack of vision that may be present at birth or develop later in life.

Visual impairments present in several ways and don’t necessarily mean a person is blind. Both blindness and visual impairment have many causes, and each person will be affected differently. A lack of vision can impact a person’s ability to live independently and access areas of life that usually require full sight.

Things like working, driving, and socialising can present difficulties or be non-viable for a person who is visually impaired or blind. Blindness can also occur alongside deafness. This section offers resources for living with blindness or visual impairment.

RNIB is handy for reading newspapers, music, or books with a visual impairment. RSBC offers support for blind children, and Blind Aid helps to provide support and reduce isolation in visually impaired Londoners.
