Glaucoma

Man with his eyes closed

Glaucoma is a condition where there is damage to the optic nerve that connects the eye and brain.

It is a common condition that is usually caused by a fluid build-up behind the eye. This fluid puts pressure on the nerve and causes visual impairment. With an ageing population in the UK, the prevalence of Glaucoma is expected to increase significantly within the next twenty years.

There are a few variations of Glaucoma and a variety of risk factors, including age; a family history of Glaucoma; hypertension (high blood pressure); an African-Caribbean ethnic origin; other vision problems like short-sightedness; and diabetes.

For further information and advice, you can visit Glaucoma UK. They can guide you through symptoms, treatment options, and advice for living with Glaucoma.
