Celebrating more than 3,000 years of NHS service as healthcare workers welcomed into “inspirational” Hall of Fame
Healthcare workers who have devoted more than 3,000 years of NHS service have been officially welcomed into a new Hall of Fame celebrating the people who have transformed lives and shaped local health services over decades.
Over 120 colleagues who have dedicated 25 years or more to the NHS have been proudly recognised by leaders at one of the country’s largest health groups at St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals (gesh).
Together, these individuals represented an extraordinary 3,227 years of NHS service, each with a personal and inspiring story that has helped to shape NHS services today.
Surrounded by family and friends at a charity-funded event, these dedicated colleagues were welcomed into the gesh25 Hall of Fame where their achievements and reflections can be shared to inspire others working in the NHS.
This included:
• Charmaine Case who has spent 43 years caring for patients with breast cancer at St George’s Hospital, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award at the NHS Parliamentary Awards 2023 and mentoring new nurses;
• Jo Moon, a Superintendent Radiographer at Epsom and St Helier, who in her 25 years at the NHS emotionally recalls reading the ‘final goodbyes’ from loved ones to Covid patients in intensive care during the pandemic;
• Jenny Muir, Group Nursing Information Officer, who celebrates more than 40 years with the NHS, including 18 years at Epsom and St Helier and 17 at St George’s. Her vast experience spanning community nursing, ward leadership and education means Jenny now plays a vital role in helping clinicians use digital tools to improve patient care; and
• Ediscyll Lorusso who has 26 years’ NHS service and is a Specialist Nursing Practitioner at St George’s. Ediscyll became the youngest winner of the national “Our Health Heroes Lifetime Contribution Award at the age of 44, and she carried the Queen’s Baton at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Sir Mark Lowcock KCB, Group Chair, said: “More than 3,000 years of NHS service is far more than a number – it’s a powerful reflection of the commitment and compassion of our colleagues and the lives changed behind every year they have dedicated to the NHS.”
Mat Shaw, Group Chief Executive, added: “Our gesh25 Hall of Fame is testament to the impact our colleagues have had and how important it for us to recognise their achievements.
“While the many roles recognised are different, they all share the same commitment to helping others and making a lasting difference to patients, communities and the wider NHS.”
The celebrations will continue in July with a week of wellbeing activities to boost the wellbeing health and care staff across the group’s hospital and community services. This will be followed by the annual gesh CARE awards in September, where unsung teams or individuals can be recognised for their achievements, including the Public Choice for Outstanding Care as nominated by patients, their families and carers.
These events come at no cost to the NHS, thanks to local sponsors and the generous support for the St George’s Hospital Charities and Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Charity.
All form part of the ‘gesh Big Thank You’ – a series of events this year to boost morale and support the Group’s workforce in response to the NHS Staff Survey.
