Statement on suspended nurse – 20 January 2026
You may have seen media coverage about a nurse who worked at Epsom and St Helier Hospital.
She was suspended on full pay last year for potentially breaching a patient’s confidentiality.
Following an investigation and an internal disciplinary hearing, the member of staff is being reinstated to clinical duties.
We are sorry that our member of staff experienced threatening and racially offensive language. In response we warned a patient that they would be excluded from our care if this behaviour continued.
Everyone working in the NHS has a legal duty to keep patient information confidential and the member of staff has been reminded about their responsibilities. Confidential information includes the diagnosis and treatment.
Nurses must also follow professional standards such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s code of conduct – this includes maintaining confidentiality for any patients in their care at all times. NMC guidance can be found here: The Code
Although details including their physical appearance, diagnosis and treatment were shared publicly, we are not aware that anyone has identified the patient.
