Dr Salim Yasin, consultant in paediatric medicine, looks babies in the neonatal unit

My story

Paediatric consultant: Dr Salim Yasin

Hello, my name is Dr Salim Yasin, and I’m a consultant paediatrician with a specialist interest in neonatology.

I spend the majority of my working day caring for sick and premature babies (born after 26 weeks) who need care in the neonatal unit at St Helier.

I knew from an early age that I wanted to work with children and that I wanted to be a doctor. I trained at University College London and worked at St Helier as a registrar for two years. I've stayed in and around London, but I came back to St Helier in December 2008.

It is an honour to play a part in the care of a young and fragile life. A lot of our patients come back to visit us with their parents, once they're a bit older, and that really is a fantastic thing to see. To know that you've been a part of their care, and to see them laughing and smiling like nothing happened at all, is exactly why we do what we do.

I think the fact that so many families come back to visit the ward just shows what they think of our service - the proof is in the pudding. I think we're a well-respected service, and we stand strong next to the other neonatal units in the area.

You'll find that a lot of the people who work in the department completed their training here, and returned a couple of years later. I think the fact that we're a close team, who work together through the good days and the more difficult ones, helps a lot.

“IT IS AN HONOUR TO PLAY A PART IN THE CARE OF A YOUNG AND FRAGILE LIFE."
