Head of Midwifery and Gynaecology: Marion Louki

Hello, my name is Marion Louki, and I am Interim Head of Midwifery and Gynaecology at Epsom and St Helier hospitals.

I have been in post since July, and I am operationally responsible for women’s health and maternity services across the trust. My role is very varied, and also includes quality, safety and risk management, ensuring patient flow through our services, and I meet regularly with the Executive Team. I work closely with our Chief Nurse Charlotte Hall, who is approachable, knowledgeable and supportive; something I make sure is filtered down through the whole team.

I joined the trust as a consultant midwife in April 2014. I became interested in midwifery after having my own children – I am a mother-of-four. My training began in 2000 at Kingston Hospital, where I trained for two years before joining St George’s Hospital in South West London as a third year midwifery student. I secured my first post with St George’s as a newly qualified midwife, and undertook many roles including Delivery Suite Co-ordinator, Teenage Team Midwife, Joint Lead for the Birth Centre and Lead for Serious Incidents before taking on the role of Deputy Head of Midwifery for two years. Before joining the NHS, I was a graphic designer and owned my own business, skills which are still useful in the NHS.

I’m responsible for a team of matrons, senior nursing and midwifery colleagues who oversee the clinical teams and the delivery of care to patients in different departments and areas. There are a lot of things to do in our busy departments and things can be challenging, but I have a good team around me who are supportive of the job I have to do and they are always up for the challenge and change!

The team is very caring, and I believe this enables us to deliver the best possible care to our patients and mothers-to-be. I like to think I give them the support they need, and equally it is returned. In my opinion if you care for your staff then they are going to care for the women who we look after.

We absolutely welcome newly qualified staff as well as more experienced appointees. We have got a good rotation programme here, and there are opportunities to develop – working for this trust is like being a part of a big family.  We are quite nurturing as a team here, so my message to anyone looking to join us is: we’d love to see you!

"THE TEAM IS VERY CARING, AND I BELIEVE THIS ENABLES US TO DELIVER THE BEST POSSIBLE CARE TO OUR PATIENTS AND MOTHERS-TO-BE. I LIKE TO THINK I GIVE THEM THE SUPPORT THEY NEED, AND EQUALLY IT IS RETURNED."
