100 Cases series

The 100 Cases series provides a unique learning and revision tool that guides students through clinical cases similar to those that students and foundation year doctors may meet in the general practice setting. The cases have been written specifically to help students develop skills of clinical reasoning through the scenarios which have include the patient’s medical history. 

Electronic titles that are available to staff working at our hospitals who have an Athens username and password include:

  • ‘100 Cases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology’ 

  • ‘100 Cases in Surgery’.

Amirsys eBooks

All staff now have access to 40 image-rich clinical references with an OpenAthens username and password connected to our hospitals. The references provide diagnostic and treatment information whenever you need it. The book collection spans diagnostic pathology, specialty imaging, and diagnostic radiology, forming one of the world’s largest radiology collections. Each title offers an easy-to-read, organ or system-specific combination of diagnosis, annotated images, and clinical commentary by leaders in their field. All links open in a new window.

The library has purchased a number of the electronic titles from the market leading ‘at a Glance’ series including

  • ‘Medical Statistics at a Glance’,

  • ‘Ophthalmology at a Glance’,

  • ‘Oral Microbiology at a Glance’

  • ‘Haematology at a Glance’. 

This series is used worldwide by health professionals, junior doctors and more.  
Well-renowned for the presentation of its topics which uses easy to follow diagrams accompanied by concise explanatory text, this series of books are useful introductory texts to a given topic.

Staff that work at our hospitals who have an OpenAthens username and password are the only ones that can have access to these electronic books.

Electronic ABC Books

The ABC series of books are an up to date, highly illustrated and practical source of knowledge for health care professionals. A number of electronic titles from the series are available to staff working at our hospitals who have an OpenAthens username and password. Titles that have been purchased by the library include:

Oxford handbooks online

All members of staff who work for our hospitals and have an NHS OpenAthens username and password can access the following Oxford Handbooks online.

The Oxford Handbooks online series are known to be the world’s most trusted source for scholarly research reviews. They contain in-depth, evidence based high level articles are one of the most cited series within scholarly publishing. 

The Library has purchased a number of titles including the Oxford Handbook of Midwifery, Oxford Handbook of Respiratory Medicine, Oxford Handbook of Dialysis and the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine.

Please note as mentioned above only Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS staff can have access to these titles.

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Procedures

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Procedures (opens in a new window): The online edition of this popular title is now available with an Epsom and St Helier Athens username and password.  It contains evidence-based clinical skills and procedures related to all the essential aspects of a patient’s care.

The Textbook of Paediatric Emergency Medicine

This textbook is considered to be the most comprehensive one in the field of paediatric emergency medicine.  It includes over 70 acute paediatric presentations and includes chapters on palpitations, cystic fibrosis and ultrasound.

The Thieme E-Book Library

The Thieme E-Book Library is a collection of illustrated colour atlases and flexibooks. It is a wonderful resource for learning, research and review in medicine and the life sciences.  You can download any book in the collection directly to your mobile device (android or iPad) or personal computer to view offline if and when you do not have internet access. You can set up profiles and personalise your account by centrally managing your bookmarks and notes. Once logged in you can print content directly, or download and print full chapters. The Thieme E-Book Library will continue to expand with new titles and editions being available upon their release to facilitate subscribers keep up to date on emerging subject areas.
